MARCH 2
TURANGAWAEWAE FESTIVAL
Quin and his ukulele
Rock climbing

We are lucky to be a multicultural school so we are lucky because we get to have our Turangawaewae Festival. I didn't go to the Turangawaewae but I know what happened. There were lots of people helping doing food stalls. It was a very busy day before the festival started with heaps of people out putting up gazebos. Some of the people in my class were wearing traditional costumes from their
country.

Room 4 have been following a group of scientists who are going on a boat to Antarctica. We have sent a teddy down with them named Pakarana who is a kiwi named after our school. It's been organised by a man called Gareth Morgan.

BOOK WEEK
We have book week to inspire people to read and to research in a fun way. During the week we have teachers (and sometimes parents) from other classes come and read to us.

Book Week Parade Day by Campbell and Jason on PhotoPeach

DAVID GAWITH'S TRIP
David Gawith and about 50 other scientists and journalists went down through the subantarctic islands to   Antarctica. They met a lot of animals on the islands. My favourite animal was the elephant seal. The elephant seal got their name because they are so big and heavy.
It was cool how the boat smashed through the ice as it neared Antarctica. They said Antarctica was real cold. Then they all went up to Nepal. They climbed a mountain about 4,800 meters high. Then they returned to New Zealand. David came back to give us our mascot Pakarana and he told us about his trip.
LAKE ROTOITI
On the 22nd of May rooms 3 and 4 went to Lake Rotoiti just past Saint Arnaud. We went on a bus. George and Jaskaran vomited on the way there. The lake was huge. We met a lady named Peta. She was showing us around. I was Logan's buddy. Me, Logan, Jason, Eddie, Jackson and George went on the Honeydew walk with Mr B. We had to answer questions from a quiz. Then Peta showed us some of the traps they use for catching the wildlife. She told us that controlled meant kill. Then we had some lunch on one of the jetty's. Then we went over to the other jetty and saw some eels. Then we went to watch a video about the eels. Then we went back on the bus home.

TREASURE ISLAND

This story starts in the Admiral Benbow , an inn.  Jim Hawkins (played by Quin) works there.  Billy (played by Shanti  ) comes to stay.  He has a treasure map  .  He was once a pirate , a member of Captain  Flinty's crew.  He is visited by Black  Dog ( played by Stevie )who fights him.  Then the evil Blind Pew  (played by Sacha) comes and scares him to death.
Jim gets the map . He gets the Goodies, Dr Livesey  (played by Charlie ) Squire Trelawney (played by Sarah ),  Mr Dance (played by Shannen ) and they hire a ship called the Hispaniola.  The captain is Captain  Smollett(played by Makayla ) who gets Long John Silver  (played by Madison ) to collect a crew.  Long John is evil and one of Captain Flinty's pirates.  He collects all the other pirates and away they sail.
On the trip Jim  hears of a plot to kill the goodies. When they get to the island the Goodies go to the stockade. The baddies go in search of the treasure.  An old pirate called Ben Gunn (played by Zion ) who has been marooned , arrives and joins the goodies .
Jim takes off and sails the ship around the island .  The pirates have nowhere to go.  There's a big fight .  The pirates are winning until they hear Ben Gunn  who they think is a ghost of Captain Flinty.  Ben Gunn screams horribly..
They all run away and the goodies find the treasure and sail back to England.
My favourite part was meeting Ben Gunn
Our awesome narrator

STREET RACE
On Friday 27th of July we had our cross country. Each age group was doing a different track. My age group goes up Pah Street, round Atkins Street, down Poole Street, through Memorial Park and through the Talbot Street gate. I was competing against most of my friends. Miss Sefton called us up. Ready Set GO!!! We all sprinted off round the back field and out the Talbot Street gate. So far so good. Up Pah Street we went, all of us sprinting. When we got to Atkins Street we all slowed down. We all had sprinted the whole way and were all so puffed. We jogged all the way down Poole Street till we got to Memorial Park.Thats when the real race begun. Everyone was sprinting. We all crossed the road about the same time. It was a mad dash for the finish line. We ran in the gate and everyone started cheering. We all ran across the field and into our slots. I came 7th. I went round to the court to see how my friends went. Harsh came 4th, Logan came 2nd, Jackson came 1st, Alex came 1st in Year 6 and Fergus came 3rd. Everyone was happy with their result.

WINTER TOURNAMENT

On Friday 14th September we had the Winter Sports Tournaments. There were four sports to choose from. They were Soccer, Netball, Rugby and Hockey. I played Soccer.

Four of my best friends were in my team. They were Harsh, Logan, Alex and Blake. Our team was coached by Tony ( Blake's Dad) and he is awesome because he gave us lollies. Our team was Parklands 3.

I played Midfielder, Striker and Goalie. Our team had 6 wins 3 losses and 1 draw. Our draw was against Parklands 1.

Upper Moutere were probably our toughest opponent. They beat us 5-3.

I scored 1 super amazing brilliant extraordinary goal in the tournament. It was against Mapua.

We won the playoff for 6th place. There were 20 teams in the tournament. Parklands 1 won the tournament and Parklands 2 came 2nd. Parklands was the best school at Soccer because all our teams were in the top 8. The winter tournament was awesome.

KAPAHAKA AFTER THE SHOW

On Thursday 8th of November we performed in the Kapahaka festival. It was awesome. We performed
after Parklands Senior Juniors. We waited in the changing room while they performed. We watched them on the TV. They were pretty good. Our goal was to be better than them. They finished. The audience went crazy. We were all nervous. We walked out onto the stage. The girls were in front of us.  We started singing. We were awesome. The audience screamed. Then it was haka time. 'Kia Rite Kia Rite Taringa Whakarona Mi Kia Mo. Yes! The haka was awesome. The audience loved our performance. We went of stage very happy about our performance. Later on in the day we came back to see the whanau classes perform. They were awesome. Especially the haka. The Kapahaka was awesome. Hopefully i get to do it again next year.

MY NEW HALL REPORT

On Monday 29th of October people from all around the region gathered at our school to celebrate the opening of our new school hall named Aniwaniwa. Even the mayor Mr Kempthorne was there. There were lots of kindergarten kids there.

Whaea Tania was hosting the event. First she told us a story of some colours and their importance. She then got kindergarten kids wearing those colors to come up and stand with her. Then she presented a flag to Mr Major to hang in the hall. The flag had all of the colors from her story on it.

Then we all got to do a lap of the hall to see how it looked inside. The walls were green and blue. There was a kitchen in the hall replacing Mrs Milne's office. There was also a mysterious object on the wall but we will get to that later.

Then we all went back outside and sat down.  Marion Edwin,  chairperson of Board Of Trustees came up and made a speech about the new hall. She also told us about the museum just outside our school which  used to be the school hall. Then she made all the thank yous to the builders and everyone who helped to make the hall possible.

Then Whaea Sue came up and showed us the mysterious object which was the Tukutuku Panel. It was awesome. It was mainly made by Selina and Hinekura but others helped as well.

When the ceremony was over we got to go get a biscuit and a chocolate.

Later on in the afternoon we went down to the new hall to practise our kapahaka. The new hall is cool.

THE NEW BUILDING, ANIWANIWA, na Emma me Ria

ANIWANIWA

Post authors Ria and Emma

The colours of the rainbow.
The name.

On the 29th of October Parklands gathered our chairs in front of the Multipurpose room.

It was an absolutely amazing success. Whaea Tania started singing a Karanga to welcome the visitors for example, the Mayor Mr Kempthorne, Whaea Gladys, and the Board of Trustees.  Whaea Gladys is the Maori minister, and blessed the building.  Whaea Gladys led everyone into the beautiful building while she also sprinkled water.  Then Whaea Tania stood up and announced the name, Aniwaniwa.  Don't you think it's the most beautiful name?  Aniwaniwa means rainbow. Whaea Tania had a story to share with us about the colours of the rainbow.  Here is the story:

The colours of the rainbow were fighting about who was the most important colour.

Red was saying that he must be the most important because he was the colour of blood, and without blood there would be no life.

As you know Orange is the second colour of the rainbow, and it was his turn to argue.  "Well I think I must be the most important colour because I'm the colour of the sun, and the sun rise and sun set, and without the sun there would be no warmth on Earth."

While Orange and Red were fighting Yellow spoke up and said: "Well, actually I think I'm the most important colour because I'm the colour of flowers, like daffodils and daisies and buttercups.  Of course all of you know that I'm the colour of  spring and you know that you have to have flowers in spring, therefore I must be the most important colour."

Green had been thinking about what he would say to argue, but finally he thought of a very good reason, "Look here all of you," he said " I must definitely just must be the most important colour, because I'm the colour of grass and trees, and without trees there would no oxygen and without oxygen nothing can live.  So that's that, I must be the most important. You all know that that's the truth".

While Red, Orange, and green were squabbling Blue shouted at the top of his voice, " Oy! Why are we squabbling? All we need to do is tell the truth, and just say that I'm the most important colour, because I'm  the colour of the sky and without the sky there would be no air, and without air there would be no oxygen, and without oxygen there will be no life! So surely I'm the most important colour.

Indigo wanted to prove he was the most important colour, so he decided to say: "Oh my gosh!, are you still trying to prove your the best? Well, when I'm finished you all will know I'm the most important colour."  Indigo started to talk about why he's the most important colour. "Well, I'm the colour of peace and passion, so you all must agree I'm the the most important colour."

Violet turned around to face the colours and shook his head sadly and said "All of you you are so silly. Can't you see that without even one colour, our world would be desert,  as there would be no water, life, passion, oxygen, sunset, blood, and grass!  You are all as special as each other.  You need to stop fighting about this silly stuff."  The colours finally agreed with Violet, and shined in the sky.

One of the main reasons for choosing the Rainbow was because our school has lots of people that come from different countries,  and all of these special people work together, just like the colours of the Rainbow.

At the end,  we all got a lolly from the pot of gold.

We will be using Aniwaniwa as a hall, and also a mulipurpose room.

My name is Monique.   I am an animal lover\nature lover.   I eating fish.   I have most of the personalties of a cat like eating fish! I have a nana,  grandfather and a mom ,10 cats, round about 50 birds, 3 fish, 2 dogs and 3 rabbits.   My favorite animal is cats.  I love doing gymnastics and stretching my back into a backwards bridge.  I also love the color ORANGE!!!! At my house I have the most annoying bird but nanas 49 are ok.  Everyone calls me mini and since I put something about cats in my book at my old school the teachers called me Kitty.   I love reading.   I love kicking a ball around the trampoline with my friends.  I love writing stories about cats and Egypt.   I am interested about learning about penguins and the Antarctic.  I  like going to school.   I love to attend in most things.  I like to play on my trampoline.   I Love to sing.  My mum is the best hair dresser but she just works in the roses and gets the usual scratches and prickles every day.  My nana is a bus driver.  And of course my grandfather sits at his home watching TV  eating  lollies and sleeping.  Sometimes when I play with my black cat sweep he jumps up and looks like he is doing the cha cha in the air.   Rat bag Persil loves to get in the top of the wardrobe (it really looks like world war 3 just happened in there hence the name wardrobe lol) ;)

                                                            ROCK DA HOUSE
On the 30th of august mot south riwaka and the best school in the world PARKLANDS peformend in the rock da house choir. Jason was a soloist with Heather in Falling  Slowly and Makayla was a  soloist in We Are The World. One of my favorite songs were Bad Hair Day because we had to wear wigs and it would have  looked like I was wearing a mop. In Austrian Yodel the parents had to do the actions and they were all pethetic at it. It was to freezing at the memorial hall.  I really want to replay the whole peformance all over again.

Oral Health Week

A few weeks ago I learnt that you achuly have to brush 3 times a day. You need to eat more vegetables than fruit because fruit contains alot of sugar. In the olden days they had to use tobacco and honey mixed together YUCK!!!!! I also learnt the layers of a tooth and here they are: Pulp, Dentine and enamel. Now we all know at least one new thing about teeth.

GROSS TEETH

HEALTHY TEETH

                                          MY HOBBIES

My hobbies are: Making brooches, Writing made up stories, Playing on my rip-stick and exploring nature. These are all activities I do in my spare time. One of my best finds in nature is a four leaved clover. When I am making brooches my cats somet1imes tread in the pile of ribbon. When I am writing stories I at least include 1 thing that I have seen in nature. And finally when I am playing on my rip-stick my cat Sooty sometimes barges in front of me.

                                                                          OUR CARS

On the 19th of October 2012 we raced our cars. There were many different kinds of cars. My car was a Rat Trap car and if it didn't work it could have been the starting gun. My car was up against a mouse trap car and of course mine won. On the second race my car didn't get set properlly so it just went BANG.
The final result was that Fergus's was the fastest.

OPENING CEREMONY

It was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Firstly, we all listened to Whaea Tina talk about the all new Multi-purpose room called Aniwaniwa. Whaea Tina talked about why it was called Aniwaniwa and the legend of the colours fighting and then joining hands and forming a rainbow. Then we all walked into the
Multi-purpose room and looked around.  At the very end they showed us a tukutuku pattern and gave us  each a shortbread cookie and a chocolate. It was so awesome and I loved hearing about how the

Multi-purpose room got its name

KAPA HAKA PRACTICES

The Kapa Haka festival is nearly here. Rooms 3 and 4 have been practicing for weeks now ready for the performance. We have been learning three songs, Pa Mai, E Rona, and a haka Poutini.

KAPA HAKA

The day was finally here. It was so scary being in the front row but luckily we had the opening and the little kids first. With the opening the host school (Pakarana) sat in  front of the whole audience to welcome the Kapa Haka Festival. When the little kids were on we all didn't see much of them because we all had to cram into this tiny space. When rooms 3 and 4 was on we peformed pa mai and e rona and of corse poutini. I thought all the other schools were cool but overall Pakarana is the best.

TOKU MAHI NA Bailey

In my family I have a brother, two sisters, mum, step dad. I like learning about legends  and Dinosaurs and  the Titanic. I like reading and I like playing rugby and soccer.

Lake Rotoiti
We went to lake Rotoiti on Tuesday 22 of May which took 3 quarters of an hour. George vomited on the floor of the bus and made me want to vomit too. When we got there we had morning tea then we went for a walk in the forest. We went to panels and answered some questions and then we left to the conservation building and watched an eel movie then we went back to school and went home at 4.30.pm.
Favourite Antarctic Animal
Elephant seals are my favourite animal because they snort and fight by standing then biting each other's necks they weigh 4 tonnes. When the males fight in the breeding season most babies get squashed under the males' weight.  I got this information from David Gawith.By Bailey

ORAL HEALTH WEEK

What I learned was cavities and about how bad they are.  Holes form from lots of junk food, especially sugary food.  Clean teeth are great but teeth with plaque are disgusting.
I ALWAYS keep my teeth clean.
