BOOK WEEK
Book Week Parade Day by Emma And Alissa on PhotoPeachWe have Book Week because we like to find out about book characters and to get kids into reading. Book Week was arranged by Becky-our librarian. During the week we had Elise and Ria's Mum Twix to read a book to us . We also did something called DROP EVERYTHING AND READ-or DEAR.Some of us even did book reviews. We did a parade on Friday. We dressed up and paraded through the streets, to the kindergarten and back to school. We had a lovely week on Book Week.
LAKE ROTOITI TRIP
On Tuesday, 22nd May we sped on the bus to Lake Rotoiti. Two boys vomited on the bus, but another went outside. Harsh and Logan had to sit on the seat one vomited on. When we got to our destination we divided into random groups with room 3. We then went walkies in the bush. My group was Charlee, Karina and Chevaugn. Our group leader was Mr T. We got to taste honeydew. It tastes like honey and it's really sweet. Charlee couldn't stop eating it. Then we had lunch on the bridge. Three ducks were fighting and pulling each others tails. We then headed to another bridge to watch the eels. We saw about ten eels. Then the bus drove us to the information centre. Peta talked to room 3 about the Great Spotted Kiwi and we watched a six minute movie about eels, then we swapped. We had so much fun on our trip. By Emma
THE EXPERIENCE OF DAVID GARWITH.
On Tuesday 12 June David Garwith came to Parklands School to talk to room 3 and 4 about his experience at Antarctica. He went down on an old ship. He felt very safe on that ship. The crew, about 50 people went to the Subantarctic Islands, like Campbell Islands, The Snares and much more.
We learned that the claims of Antarctica is like unfair pizza slices. New Zealand has quite a big slice of the pizza but Australia has an even bigger slice. Countries like France have a tiny slice.

TREASURE ISLAND
This story starts in the Admiral Benbow, an inn. Jim Hawkins (played by Quin) works there. Billy Bones (played by Shanti ) comes to stay. He has a map. He was once a pirate, a member of Captain Flint's crew. He is visited by Black Dog (played by Stevie )who fights him. Then the evil Blind Pew (played by Sasha ) comes and scares him to death.
Jim gets the map. He gets the Goodies, Dr Livesey (played by Charlie ) Squire Trelawney (played by Shannen ), Mr Dance (played by Sarah ) and they hire a ship called the Hispaniola. The captain is Captain Smollett (played by Makayla ) who gets Long John Silver (played by Madison ) to collect a crew. Long John Silver is evil and one of Captain Flint's pirates. He collects all the other pirates and away they sail. On the trip Jim hears of a plot to kill the goodies and get the treasure.
When they get to the island the goodies go to the stockade. The baddies go in search of the treasure. An old pirate called Ben Gunn (played by Zion ) who has been marooned, arrives and joins the goodies. Jim takes off and sails the ship around the island. The pirates have nowhere to go. There's a big fight. The pirates are winning until they hear Ben who they think is a Ghost of Captain Flint. Ben screams horribly.. They all run away and the goodies find the treasure and sail back to England.
My favourite part was the songs because I like singing.
My favourite character was Long John Silver because in the play he sings well.

THE STREET RACE
On the 27 July Parklands School had a street race. Miss Sefton, our sports co - ordinater came up with it. We call it the modern way of cross - country. Depending on year level we did different races.
Year 1 - 3 did an easy race and year 4 - 5 did a harder race, Year 6 did a big race and year 7 - 8 did a even bigger race.
I am a year four and I came second. My friend Zara came before me.
Shannen (a year five) came first but she is a year five not year four.
After the race we all got juices.
We had heaps of fun and lots of good places.
At our School we have houses the colours are Green, Yellow, Black, Blue and Red.
My house is Green but black house won.
Our street race was really fun and I enjoyed it very much.

THE OLYMPICS.
THE FIRST OLYMPICS
The first Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, 776 BC. In thees early games, the events were very traditional and included running, javelin throwing, wrestling and boxing.
1 DAY OLYMPICS
The only race was a short one from one end of the stadium to the other. More events were added as time went on like, discus and chariot racing.
PENTATHLON
One of the toughest sports was the race for hoplites men wearing armour and carrying sheilds.
Winners were given a wreath of leaves and a heros welcome home . Winners might also marry rich women, enjoy free meals or tickets for the best seats in the theatre.

Makayla is singing We Are The World and Jason is singing Falling Slowly. We have been practising at the other participating schools like Riwaka and Mot South. Quin is playing ukelele for Hey Soul Sister. Our school is performing on Thursday 30th of August but other schools like Tasman, St Peter Chanel, Lower Moutere and Mapua are performing on Wednesday. And Tuesday are Upper Moutere Ngatimoti, Dovedale and Mahana. The organisers are John and Paulette. John wrote some of the songs like Bad Hair Day and Mati Mahi Kaora. My favourite song is One Day.

ORAL HEALTH WEEK
18-9-12
Last week our school had an Oral Health Week. We had a long lunch which is a healthy lunch for everybody. Some parents came and helped us eat it. We also did project and a poster for the parents to look at. I did a project about CAVITIES!!
Do you know what causes cavities?
Some people say that eating to much sugar leads to cavities but thats only half true.
Not brushing your teeth is half the problem. When you brush your teeth you are brushing away the microorganisms that live on your teeth. When you don't brush your teeth the microorganisms stay on your teeth and your teeth get cavities.
On 14th of September Parklands School year 4 and up went by bus to the Winter Tournament. The sports were netball, (which I played) soccer, rugby and hockey. Our team played 21 games. We lost 2 drew 2 and if you can do maths, we won 17. My position was usually GK or WD.
Tagan was mostly GA because she was good at it. I had to go to a dance exam at 12:00 so I missed about 4 games.
On Thursday year 7 and 8 had their sports. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 were meant to have their sports both on Wednesday but it was wet so the year 7 and 8 had theirs before us.
Our netball coach was Anna but Manu coaches us at school. On the way back, the bus was noisy and when we got back the year 7 and 8 were playing a game, UNFAIR!
I had lots of fun at our winter tournament even though I had to miss 4 games of my favourite sport.

OUR CARS
MY CAR WHICH WAS BATTERY POWERED |
When Mr B gave us the newsletter that we were going to be making self-propelled cars, we were very excited. Some of us did ours straight away but I sort of forgot about it until Mr B reminded us, then I got into it. I thought that I could do a battery powered one out of my meccano so I used the stuff from it then made it up myself but I had to get my brother to help me in some parts.
THIS IS WHAT I USED TO MAKE MY CAR:
TWO BATTERIES
ONE MOTER
FOUR WHEELS
LOTS OF RODS, (I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW MANY)
HEAPS OF NUTS AND BOLTS, (WELL, A NUT HAS TO HAVE A BOLT AND PLUS I DIDN'T COUNT HOW MANY)
My car failed when we did the race on Friday but we are going to have another race tomorrow so I'm happy.
Room three came to watch our race. It was fun and there were lots of laughs about people's cars not working. I think all of us had a good time.

KAPA HAKA FUN DAY
KAPA HAKA FUN DAY
On the 8th of November we, Room 4 Parklands school, put all of our practice into the Kapa Haka fun day. Our songs were: Pai Mai, E Rona and the Haka. Alana led Pai Mai, Shannen led E Rona and Jack, Liam and Jackson led the Haka.
When every one was in the hall we listened a Mihi Whakatau to welcome everyone.
Before our performance we were put into the back stage room and commanded to stay quiet. Our performance was quite good I felt. The other school that I liked was our school :), instead of our class it was the Whanau though. I actually had a tear in my eye from feeling so proud of our school. The day was wonderful and I couldn't wait till Friday to see the seniors and the juniors.
